Altered Books....4 pages!

Okay...two pages...pretty quickly! Trace your hand on a piece of magazine (pick colors your find interesting). Glue this down on the left hand side of the book. On the right hand side, trace your hand. Paint the background a color that coordinates. Add small bits of paint to the side that has the collaged hand. TA-DA, your book is starting to look like art!

Two more pages...here's how to do it. On one side of the book, find a word (s) or phrase that is interesting to you. On the page on the right it was "Emotional Attitude." Cover up with paint or markers everything other than these words. On the left hand side, write the word in a funky, expressive or fitting way. You can paint or draw onto construction paper and glue down. Okay, that's four pages....complete!

Altered Books, where to start??!

Advanced 8th graders, and this year ALL 8th graders this year are completing an Altered Book 3rd quarter instead of sketches. This is a very challenging project, required WORK OUTSIDE of class...but the results can be amazing!!

Step one: Get a hardbound book, you are going to turn into art!

Step two: tear out pages speratically thoroughout the book. DO NOT tear too many towards the front, towards the back or in one area...it will make your book weak.

Step three: paper clip your book into sections. This will make the project not seem so scary. This is how many sections you will be required to complete over the quarter!

Step Four: CUT sections. You can cut windows, cut pages into hearts...etc. Look at the other pictures for examples.

Step Five: GLUE. Using a paintbrush will work best. YES Paste, is expensive but works best. Glue sticks work well too. Elmers leaves the pages lumpy. Modge Podge painted with with a brush works well too. Make sure you wash your brushes well, so they don't get ruined!
